Reynold's Institute

About a month ago I found out that I have been accepted to the Reynold's Journalism Institute. Back in February I applied on a whim, and now I have committed two weeks of my summer to this adventure in Reno.

Here's a little bit about the program:

The Reynolds Institute is an intensive two-week journalism training program for high school teachers and staffers. Instruction is based on the core tenets of journalism and the skills needed to produce a top-notch scholastic publication. In 2011, we will select 175 teachers for the program. THERE IS NO COST TO THE TEACHER OR SCHOOL.

KEY TOPICS
Multimedia reporting, writing, editing, photojournalism, online and digital posting, layout and design, opinion pages, journalism credibility, ethics and responsibilities, the future of journalism and business-side skills.

OBJECTIVES
  • Help students start or improve a student newspaper online and/or on paper.
  • Enhance the teaching of journalism and the First Amendment.
  • Learn about journalism, ethics, the First Amendment, critical thinking and leadership development.
A free and vital press is a cornerstone of democracy. Independent student newspapers that practice high journalistic standards inform and engage the entire school community.

BENEFITS
The Reynolds Institute pays for:
  • Continuing education credits determined at each university’s discretion upon completion of all assignments.
  • Program and study materials.
  • Travel to/from the Institute that we pre-approve (flights arranged by our designated agent OR mileage reimbursement, whichever costs less).
  • Housing (no roommate) and meals.
  • A journalism reference library.
  • Membership to the Student Press Law Center, Journalism Education Association and state/regional scholastic press group.
I am super excited! :)

Wedding Weekend

On Friday I joined the lovely ladies (pictured above) to get pedicures in SugarHouse. I bought new shoes, spent time with Emily, and slept at my Nana and Grandpa's house.

Saturday was a marathon day. Nicki Blair married Phil Krebs, and Blaine and I were blessed to witness their wedding ceremony. A tasty lunch of dutch oven, a quick tour of their home, and then we spent time at the church for dancing and general merriment.

I tried to jump in the photo, and really commit. The first time we jumped, Nikki Barkume (on the far right) high-kicked up cheerleader mode. After that, we giggled, and the rest of us were a little worried about showing our underthings on film. :)

Michelle Husbands let us sleep at her place on Saturday, and we were treated like royalty. Tasty meals, toiletry kit, going away gift...the works. She has done a lot to make her house look cute, and I am glad for the chance to have seen it officially.

THEN, on Sunday, we went to the wedding of Danelle and James Godfrey. It was beautiful and quirky. We were able to sit next to two lovely couples, eat tasty food, and soak up the joy of people in love. And, we came home with two specialty rubber duckies.

Wonderful.

To My Love (but for the rest of you to read)

Yesterday was our anniversary. We have officially been married a year, and, no, it does not feel like we have been married a year. For me, I feel like I am still learning so much about you. In a sense, I feel like we have been married for only a few weeks. Blaine. You feel like you have been married to me FOREVER. I take this to mean that it is much easier to be married to you than it is to be married to me. Thank you for your patience as I learn how to tie my life to yours, as I learn how to be your wife. In our first year of marriage, we have purchased a home, a car, a trampoline, and three couches. We have watched entire seasons of Southland and Castle, and Glee. In our first year of marriage, we have renovated that home, housed a teenager for five months, and grown to to love each other just a bit better. I am grateful for the chance to be your wife. In this new role, I find myself waking up each day full of joy. I am happier than I have ever been. Thank you for coordinating my Father Daughter dance yesterday. The only regret I have from our wedding day is that I missed out on that. And, although I did not look like a bride yesterday, I looked like your wife, and that is infinitely sweeter.

I love you. Thank you for choosing me.
