#31 Days

My husband and I are hoping to adopt. There's not a lot we can do, but while we are waiting for our MAYBE BABY, we think a lot about what we have to offer, why we want to be be parents, and how things will be when we are given the chance. Messages for our Maybe Baby includes explorations of all of these things, and a bit of insight into our personalities, hopes, dreams, and fears. Thanks for stopping in. Enjoy the 31 day journey!

Day 16: Trials

Maybe Baby,
Sometimes life is harder than I would choose for it to be. Every person has trials that belong just to him. Heavenly Father knows what we are capable of and sends us just as much as we can handle. Trials make us stronger, even though sometimes when we are in the middle of experiencing them, it seems like we are weak and sad and things can never be any different.

You can choose how to respond to trials. They do not own you unless you let them.

Day 14: Bad News

Maybe Baby,

I'm half-way through these messages, and so far I've only given you the good news. That's not really fair. There are a lot of good things to tell you, but there are some scary things too. Take last night, for instance. I spent some time on my phone, reading through the daily news.

Front page news right now? Assault, stabbing, shooting, death, despair.

As I was reading, I realized something true and sad: you will be entering a world that is hard. There are some scary things in this world. There is a lot of negativity. Your life, in many ways, will be more challenging than my life simply because you are entering at a challenging time in history. There are a lot of scary statistics that show the ways your life will be harder.

Right now, the average length of a marriage in America is 8.8 years. That's too short.

In many places, the traditional family is becoming the exception rather than the rule.

Many people predict that never again will someone be able to say that they are better off than his or her parents. We've peaked as a society, and now many things are going downhill.

It scares me a little, as I'm sure it scares all (maybe) parents, to think of this world that we are bringing you into.

But I can't just end there. There are bits of good new sprinkled in. Did you notice? It might have been the SIXTH down on the news list, but a search helped a woman reunite with her family after THIRTY YEARS. That's incredible. It's a sliver of happiness. You might not have seen it, but I am willing to help you, to point it out.

In life, I think that there is good news, too. Some people spend so much time focusing on the bad that they forget about the good. But it's there. It might be sandwiched between the bad stuff, but GOOD is there if you look hard enough.

Day 13: Jacer

Maybe Baby,
Your uncle Jacer was adopted, just like you. He’s going to be a great person to go to when you have questions about life; his life is a little bit like your life. From the moment Jace was born, we realized that he was a good “fit” for our family. Jace is funny. He is generous and clever. I can't imagine life without him around because he is such an important part of who my parents are, who we all have become.

That’s what adoption does. It creates new, interesting families. I met his birth mother the day he was born. She was funny and sassy and bright. She loved him so much that she wanted to give him a better life than what she could provide, so she allowed my parents to adopt him. I think he sometimes wishes he knew more about his birth mother, but his adoption was closed. Times have changed, and most adoptions now are open. We will help you know your birth mother and how much she loves you.

Day 12: New Soul

For a long time I had Yael Naim’s song on repeat when I would listen to music.

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit about how to give and take.
But since I came here
Felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

It speaks to me. Every day I am learning a little more about how to give and take. This world is full of joy and fear, and making mistakes is okay.

Day 11: Neilly

Maybe Baby, your Aunt Neilly is younger than me by 4.5 years. When we were little, I was her imaginary friend of sorts. I called myself Bliss, spoke in a British accent, and we played and laughed together all the time. Please don’t think I’m some kind of weirdo. It was a special, strange way that we found to get along. When I was about 10, I realized that ShaNeil had an unhealthy relationship with this imaginary persona, so Bliss had to disappear. I was sad and she was sad and we worked through it together. I am thinking of you, but I also hope you have the chance to have a little sister someday.

Now we are friends without any weird fairy dust getting in the way.
