Last night we drove from Nephi to Cedar Fort to Payson to Cedar Fort to Sundance to Nephi. Blaine drove, I was a passenger, and Nana and Grandpa Cook's attendance at the Salmon Supper in Payson was the main motivation.
It was a lot of driving, and Grandpa loved the meal. Nana probably doesn't remember any of it. In a few weeks, they will be moving to Nephi. It needs to happen, but I am holding my breath a bit. In a few weeks, my world changes. My mom's life changes. My dad's life changes. Jace's life changes. We will find a way to fit my grandparents into our routines, all of us shouldering the weight of caring for and loving someone with Alzheimer's.
Nana doesn't even realize that she is moving, not really. When we talk about it, she places so much faith and trust in my grandpa. She might not remember much, but the memory she has most is that she loves him and he loves her. She remembers him because she has been his wife for 62 years, so she still grasps that love even when she can't hold on to much more. And that memory of this beautiful, long-lasting love, I hope, is enough to make the move to Nephi possible.
